The five levels

L1 Ad hocHappens because individuals push it. Nothing is repeatable.
L2 EmergingWritten down and repeatable in places. Mostly manual.
L3 DefinedA standard exists, people follow it, and you could show it to an auditor.
L4 IntegratedThe standard is built into tools and delivery. Measured and mostly automated.
L5 LeadingImproved continuously from live results.

In our view, L3 to L4 delivers most of the value for most organizations. Pursue L5 only with a clear business case.
